Tweeting is Such Sweet Sorrow
Canuck training camp officially opened this week with a smattering of rookies and veterans reporting to camp. In all there are 61 players competing for around 22 spots. Unlike past years there are no NHL PTO players from what I can tell and I like it. John Tortorella has said from day one this will be a year where the Canucks need to get younger and youth will be infused into the lineup. There are no Steve Begin’s or Owen Nolan’s taking precious ice time away from the kids. Torts needs to evaluate the talent and know fairly quickly who is ready for the next step. This for the most part is a veteran team who have already learned in the first few days Torts means business and isn’t about wasting time, whether that be on the ice or off.
Talking about off ice wasting time, Torts ranted this week about Twitter use by his players. As a Canuck blogger I am disappointed to hear Torts feelings on Twitter being a waste of time and that he wants his players to either stop or make very sure they are not tweeting from inside the dressing room. I see this as a moot point as I have yet to see a Canuck player tweet anything from inside the room, unless we include some toilet shots strombone1 tweeted last year. I believe this is Torts little way to remind the team and the media he is the boss and since he and GM Mike Gillis will be taking the brunt of any criticism this year why not take a harmless shot over the bow of the Canuck ship in training camp. As a fan I love it. It really doesn’t change the tweeting of the Canuck players but it draws attention to Torts and in essence to Roberto Luongo or should I say strombone1, as now Lou isn’t talking to the media about his feelings of the past few months or whether he wants to be a Canuck, rather we are all wondering how this will affect strombone1′s tweeting.
Kes’s Iverson Moment
Now on to the next media darling of the Canucks. Ryan Kesler decided this week to add of few expletives to an on camera question period. If you didn’t see it I am sure you can YouTube it or if you want a hint to what word he used repeatedly, it kinda relates to strombone1′s toilet humour. This training camp Kes is 100% healthy for the first time in a few years and maybe even more importantly is more than a little pissed off. He is tired of media and the like saying the window on the Canucks winning is either closing or has closed already. Kesler has a chip on his surgically repaired shoulder and being honest I am a big fan of angry Kes. He’s motivated to prove a few things; the haters wrong, that he will be on the US Olympic team and this version of the Canucks believes they have unfinished business. I don’t see why Kesler can’t return to his Selke winning ways and more importantly his 41 goals. There will be more consistent lines with Torts behind the bench as opposed to the carousel we saw under AV the last few year. Having regular line mates for a game, season, heck even a few consecutive shifts should go along way in helping Kes return to the success he saw in the past.
My Own Rant
My last rant is a bit off topic but I am completely ticked at a few things that are happening with the media in Vancouver. First, I am completely disillusioned with what the Team 1040 is doing with their staff changes. I tried listening to Bro Jake and Dave Pratt on the morning show and it lasted about 10 minutes. For some reason management at 1040 in this instance, thinks its best to return to the 90′s and based on early reviews this change is floundering. Scott Rintoul , Paul Debron and Paul Chapman are informed and more importantly entertaining. Putting Rintoul at night is a death knell, as I for one rarely listen at night, and booting the Pauls was just a plain mistake. Finally, as much as I just dissed returning to the past, in one instance I am totally fine with a blast from my childhood past. I enjoy watching Don Taylor on Sportsnet although it seems they are phasing him out. I have grown up watching Don and to this day still miss Sports Page. I even find myself regularly watching old “Yulin with the Page” episodes on YouTube. He is entertaining and knows his stuff, particularly Canuck and NHL history. Some will say this is long overdue and Don is past his prime, to that I will steal a little from Kes and say that is sh@#!
