It was announced this morning by Oilers GM Steve Tambellini that Craig MacTavish has been hired as Senior Vice-President, Hockey Operations. Now as far as I can tell this puts MacTavish directly above Tambellini in the organizational structure, and just below Kevin Lowe. This means that MacTavish, who was fired as the Oilers head coach by Tambellini, would technically be Tambellini’s boss.
This move surprised me a little as I didn’t think MacTavish would want to come back to the Oilers, particularly because of the way things ended when he left. He is back though and I think this is a good move for the Oilers. While he was away from the team he got his Master’s Degree in business and spent time as an analyst with TSN as well as coaching the Chicago Wolves (the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks). Hopefully this move brings us one step closer to finding the head coach that the Oilers need whoever that turns out to be. One other note is that this shows once again that the old saying is still true, once an Oiler always an Oiler.
